Motorcycle Accident in Columbia, One Dead

A fatal motorcycle accident occurred in Columbia on Saturday night, at the intersection of Hazelwood Road and Burdell Drive.  The motorcyclist was killed when he collided with a car that was traveling south on Hazelwood, according to what police reported on Sunday morning.

Police say the driver of the car was 26-year old Troy Lebrente Wilson.  City police spokeswoman Jennifer Timmons lets us know that Wilson tried to make a left turn to go east on Burdell Drive, but failed to yield right of way to the motorcycle in his path.  The motorcycle his Wilson’s front right door.  She also states that the officers claim that Wilson left the scene, but came back and was then apprehended.

The motorcyclist was driven to Palmetto Health Richland Hospital by Richland County EMTs, but was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.  His name was not yet released at the time of this report.  The Richland County coroner will probably release more information later on Sunday.

This incident was the first alcohol-related traffic fatality this year in Columbia.

Wilson now faces a plethora of charges, including felony DUI involving death, hit and run involving a death, driving under suspension second offense, seatbelt violation, failure to render aid, open container in a motor vehicle and possession with intent to distribute marijuana.  He is currently in Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center, and bond has not yet been set.
